Top Wine Bars

In the 1980’s wine bars were virtually non-existent. But in the 90’s they started appearing in major metropolitan neighborhoods across the country. By the year 2000, wine bars were very popular and started opening in smaller cities also.

Wine bars differ from restaurants and regular bars by using a philosophy known as “taste before you buy.” The customer simply picks a wine from the wine list of the bar and either orders a whole glass or a sample. If they like the wine they may order more or buy a bottle to take with them.  Bartenders are a little different in wine bars than in regular bars.  When you order in the wine bar the good bartender will give you information about the wine ranging from the country of origin to different winemaking techniques.  He may even coax you on what flavors you should expect to taste.

In New York City at last count there were approximately 131 wine bars. Places like Café Katja on the Lower East Side which has an excellent list of Austrian wines with snacks such as pretzels with spicy cheese spread. There are French-themed bars such as Solex in the East Village, and many Italian-themed bars such as Cavatappo which serve Italian type snacks to have with your wine.

One other thing I appreciate about wine bars is the laid back style where you can go and converse about wines, much like coffee bars. This removes the concept that wine drinkers are snobs and are not into socializing over a glass of wine. Below is a list of my favorite wine bars and where they are located.

The Wine Bar Saratoga Springs New York- Opened in October of 1999 this place has an awesome selection of cheeses and desserts to go with your wine. Try the Jekel, Pinot Noir 2005 with a piece of The Wine Bar Chocolate Cake. Like I said, Awesome!

Corks Restaurant in Baltimore, MD- The last time I was in Baltimore it was closed for renovations. Their website says it will reopen in September.

Yield Wine bar in San Francisco-This bar is a “green” wine bar selling only environmental friendly wines. I haven’t actually been to this bar but I have been studying “green” wines so check out their website to learn more.

La Bodega Winery and Tasting Bar at Dallas-FT worth airport-Great selection of wines and a much quieter place than the pubs/eateries.
